Physician Scientist Training Award

The American Sleep Medicine Foundation (ASMF) is pleased to announce the 2012 grant cycle for the Physician Scientist Training Award (PSTA). There are two categories of funding for the PSTA: Best Science and Comprehensive Academic Sleep Program of Distinction.

Through this award, the ASMF aims to support research training for physicians who wish to pursue careers as physician scientists in sleep medicine. The ASMF will award up to five one-year grants in the amount of $75,000 each to chosen candidates for research in sleep medicine. Four awards will be distributed in the Best Science category and one award will be distributed to an applicant of a Comprehensive Academic Sleep Program of Distinction. If an application submitted for the Comprehensive Academic Sleep Program of Distinction category is not awarded, it will be considered under the Best Science Award category. Host institutions that receive PSTA grant funding for a Best Science application one year will be ineligible to apply for PSTA grant funding in the subsequent year. The award recipients will be recognized at SLEEP 2012 in Boston.

Physicians (MD or DO) who are certified in sleep medicine by the American Board of Sleep Medicine or by a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties, and are within 10 years post sleep medicine fellowship, or who are currently enrolled in an ACGME-accredited sleep medicine fellowship are eligible to apply for the Best Science Award. Eligible applicants for the Comprehensive Academic Sleep Program of Distinction category include physicians (MD or DO) who have completed or been accepted to an ACGME sleep medicine fellowship at an institution that holds the status of this category. Both awards will include research expenses such as salary support, supplies and overhead for the awardees.

A grant review committee appointed by the ASMF Executive Board will evaluate the proposals to determine the award recipients. Candidates will be selected based on the scientific merit, diversity in geography among the applicant institutions and the institution’s receipt of other recent PSTA awards.
